CHAPTER 12

I turned to her in confusion.

“I beg your pardon?”

“This is my murder! I have every right to find and punish the person who killed me. Besides, why should you have all the fun? I want to go out and investigate my murder,” she declared.

“You do realize you’ll have to be in the same room as me for more than five minutes without trying to kill me. If you couldn’t do it when you were alive, what makes you think you can do it now?” I asked, drily.

Her nostrils flared as she tried to hold on to her temper.

“I’ll be fine. You’re just worried the salesperson at the charity shop will recognize you and might prove that you did buy your golf clubs back from her because you wanted to kill me all along.”

“If I wanted to buy something back from that shop, it wouldn’t have been the stupid clubs, you idiot. I would have bought back something I could sell for a huge profit online, like my Chanel purse,” I yelled.

“Wow,” whispered Polly. “You guys are better than the telly. It’s like the undead version of the Kardashians.”

Shazia and I turned to her in horror.

“Eww! We’re not undead! I’m alive and she is… well, she is dead,” I pointed out.

“Whatever, dude. This is hilarious. But, I do see your point. Shazia is far too volatile to be left unsupervised, so why don’t you scoot yourself between Mr. H and me, darling, and we’ll take care of you?”

She linked arms with Shazia on one side and Mr. H did the same on the other. They both looked highly entertained.

I rolled my eyes and informed Winnie that Her Ghostliness was about to inflict her presence on us for the near foreseeable future, and shoved her toward the door still protesting about having to deal with ghosts.

We marched in silence to the charity shop. They had just opened, which was a good thing because there weren’t too many people around. Winnie and I pretended to browse for a few minutes, while I gathered the courage to speak to the lady at the billing counter. It was a daunting endeavor, for she looked very grumpy this morning. I couldn’t imagine her sharing any information willingly.

With no choice in the matter, I decided to risk it anyway.

I wandered over to the counter and smiled at her politely. She responded with a grunt. Not the most auspicious beginning, I thought.

“Good morning!”

When she winced, I realized that I sounded far too chirpy for this time of the day. When I spoke again, I lowered my decibels a little.

“I was wondering if you could help me. I’m looking to buy a set of women’s golf clubs. Any chance you’ve got a set in here?”

She sighed, took a deep gulp of her coffee, and then crushed the paper cup and threw it in the bin. Then she rotated her wrists a few times before she turned on her computer. It took ages to boot, and Winnie hopped from one foot to the other like an impatient child.
